WOMEN SWEATER

Materials: Yarn: 800 (900, 1000)gr.; 1 pair each Nos. 8 and 6 needles, and set of 4 No. 8 needles; 4in. lightning zip-fastener.

Measurements: To fit 32 (34, 36) in. bust; length from shoulder, 23 (23, 23½) in.; length of sleeve, 17 (17, 17½ ) in. [1in. = 2.54cm.]

Tension: 8½  sts. to 2in. over st-st.

BACK

Using No. 6 needles, cast on 76 (80, 84) sts. and k 4 rows. Change to No. 4 needles and cont. in st-st., commencing with a k row, until work measures 15½ in.

To Shape Armholes: R.s.f., cont. in st-st., casting off 3 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. Dec. 1 st. each end of next 3 (3, 4) rows and next 2 alt. rows, 60 ( 64, 66) sts. Cont. in st-st. until armhole measures 5 (5, 5½) in. on straight. Divide for back opening: R.s.f., k 30 (32, 33) sts., turn. Work on this side only, leaving rem. sts. on holder. Cont. in st-st. until armhole measures 7½  (7½ , 8) in. on straight.

To Shape Shoulder: R.s.f., cast off 6 (6, 7) sts. at beg. of next row and 6 (7, 7) sts. at beg. of next 2 alt. Rows. Return to sts. on holder and work to correspond with first side in reverse.

FRONT

Using No. 6 needles, cast on 75 (79, 83) sts. and k 4 rows. Change to No. 4 needles and work pattern. 1st Row: R.s.f., knit.

2nd Row: P 1, * p 2 tog., w.o.n., rep. from * to last 2 sts., p 2.

3rd Row: Purl. 4th Row: Purl.

5th Row: K 2, * w.fwd., k 2 tog. t.b.l., rep. from * to last st., k 1.

6th Row: Knit. Rep. these 6 rows until work measures 15½ in.

To Shape Armholes: R.s.f., keeping patt. correct, cast off 3 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. Dec. 1 st. each end of next 3 rows and next 2 alt. rows, 59 (63, 67) sts. Cont. in patt, until armhole measures 5 (5, 5½ ) in. on straight.

To Shape Neck: R.s.f.,work 23 (25, 26) sts., turn. Work on this side only, leaving rem. sts. on holder. Cont. in patt., dec. 1st at neck edge on next 2 rows and next 3 alt. rows. Cont. in patt. until armhole measures 7½ (7½, 8) in. on straight.

To Shape Shoulder: R.s.f., cast off 6 (6, 7) sts. at beg. of next row and 6 (7, 7) sts. at beg. of next 2 alt. rows. Return to rem. Sts., slip first 13 (13, 15) sts. to holder for neckband and work on rem. 23 (25, 26) sts. to correspond with first side in reverse.

SLEEVES

Using No. 6 needles, cast on 37 (39, 41) sts. and k 8 rows. Change to No. 4 needles and work 6 patt. rows as given for front. Cont. in patt., inc. 1 st. each end of next row and every 6th foll. row 4 times, then every 8th foll. row to 59 (59, 63) sts. Cont. in patt. until sleeve measures 17 (17, 17½) in., or length required.

To Shape Top: R.s.f., cast off 2 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. Dec. 1 st. each end of next 3 alt. rows. Dec. 1 st. each end of every row until 17 sts. rem. Cast off.

NECKBAND

Seam shoulders. Using set of 4 No. 8 needles, r.s.f., k 12 sts. on left-back neck, increasing them to 14, k up 44 (44, 46) sts. round front of neck, including sts. on holder, and k 12 right-back neck sts. inc. them to 14, 72 (72, 74) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 6 rows and cast off in rib.

TO MAKE UP

Press st-st. on wrong side with warm iron over damp cloth. Fit zip-fastener into back opening. Seam sides and sleeves. Set sleeves into aimholes. Lightly press seam on wrong side.
