LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: Intermediate


MATERIALS: Coats & Clark Red Heart Classic 4 ply worsted weight yarn, Article E267 (3½ oz [100gm], 198 yds each skein): 1 skein each of #111 Eggshell (A), #808 Windsor Blue (B), #336 Warm Brown, #882 Country Blue (D), #365 Coffee (E) and #286 Bronze (F), Small amounts of #12 Black and #401 Nickel. J. & P. Coats Embroidery Floss, Article C11 (8.7 yds each skein): 1 skein each of #8403 Black (G), #8399 Steel Grey Lt. (H),  and #3150 Dusty Rose Very Lt. (I).

Crochet hook sizes D-3, G-6 and K-10½ U.S. or sizes needed to obtain gauge.

Three Styrofoam balls: 2in. in diameter; Two Styrofoam cones: 3 in. wide x 8 in. tall; One Styrofoam cone: 3 in. wide x 6 in. tall.

Beige chenille stems: 6, White chenille stems: 8.

Wooden craft slicks: 3. Cone shaped lead sinkers (3 oz): 3. Three white felt circles: 3 in. in diameter. Black pompoms (3 mm): 6. Small amount of beige Velcro. Polyfil stuffing. Wooden skewer: 12 in. long. Lightweight cardboard: 2 x 5 in. and 4 x 5 in. pieces. Tapestry needle. Craft glue. Hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional). Knife  for cutting Styrofoam. Plywood (⅛ in. thick): approx 7 x 11 in. Jigsaw. Brown paint or stain of choice. Black paint. Paintbrush. Small amount of excelsior. Black metal staff: 11½ in. long. 


MEASUREMENTS: Joseph and Shepherd = 10½ in. tall. Mary = 7½ in. tall. Baby Jesus = 3½ in. in length. Sheep =  3 x 4¾ in. Lamb = 2 x 3¾ in. Manger = 4¾ in. long x 3¼ in. wide x 3 in. deep. 


GAUGE: First 2 rnds of Joseph's Head = 2¼ in. in diameter.

 

STITCHES USED: Chain st (ch), Slip st (sl st), Single crochet (sc), Half double crochet (hdc), Double crochet (dc), Treble crochet (tr). Dec 1 sc: • (Insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st) twice, yo, draw yarn through 3 loops on hook •. Dec 1 hdc: • (Yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st and through first loop on hook) twice, yo, draw yarn through 3 loops on hook •. Dec 1 dc: • (Yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook) twice, yo, draw yarn through 3 loops on hook •.

EMBROIDERY STITCHES USED: Back st., Straight st.


NOTE: Always start with ch 2 instead of first hdc or ch 3 instead of first dc of row or rnd. End with 1 sl st in first (sc), second (hdc) or third (dc) ch at beg of rnd.


DIRECTIONS: 


Joseph: Head and Body: With G hook and C, ch 4 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch. Rnd 1: Work 12 dc in ring. Rnd 2: • Dc in dc, 2 dc in next dc •, rep from • to • around (18 dc). Rnd 3: • Hdc in each of next 3 dc, 2 hdc in next dc •, rep from • to • around (24 hdc). Rnds 4-5: Hdc in each hdc around. Insert Styrofoam ball into Head. Rnd 6: • Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, dec 1 hdc in next 2 hdc • rep from • to • around (18 hdc).  Rnd 7: • Hdc in next hdc, dec 1 hdc in next 2 hdc •, rep from • to • around (12 hdc). 

Beg Neck: Rnds 8-9: Hdc in each hdc around. Fasten off C. 

Beg Body: Rnd 10: With right side facing, using G hook, join A in first hdc in Rnd 9, ch 1, • 2 sc in hdc, sc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (18 sc). Rnds 11-13: Dc in each sc around. Rnd 14: • Dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc •, rep from • to • around (24 dc). Rnds 15-17: Dc in each dc around. Rnd 18: • Dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc •, rep from • to • around (30 dc). Rnds 19-24: Dc in each dc around. Rnd 25: • Dc in each of next 3 dc, dec 1 dc in next 2 dc •, rep from • to • around (24 dc). Rnd 26: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Fasten off.

Arm (make 2): Half (make 2): With G hook and C, ch 35 + 3 (first dc). Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 12 ch, hdc in each of next 8 ch, dc in each of next 14 ch, turn (36 sts). Row 2: Dc in each of first 14 sts, hdc in each of next 8 sts, dc in each of last 14 sts. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. 

Assembly: Insert and glue a 4 in. length of craft stick into the top of an 8 in. cone, leaving approx 1 in. protruding from the top. Allow to dry. With a knife, cut a cone-shaped hole in base of cone to fit lead sinker. Glue sinker into hole, making sure bottom of sinker is flush with base of cone. Center white felt circle over base and sinker and glue in place. Apply glue to rem 1 in. length of craft stick on top of cone and carefully place Body over cone. Center Head over craft stick and insert gently. Adjust Head and Body and allow glue to dry. Cut beige chenille stems into 6 in. lengths (for Arms) and insert approx 1 in. into cone on opposite sides of Body in Row 11. Apply a drop of glue where inserted and allow to dry. Fold chenille stems up approx ½ in. at end of each Arm for hands. With wrong sides tog, using tapestry needle and sewing length, sew 2 Arm Halves tog matching sts across length of one side, sew across short edge of Arm matching sts, then sew up opposite side approx ¾ in. Place over one chenille stem and wrap sewing length around Arm three times to form the wrist. Continue sewing across rem length of Arm to top, then sew Arm to Body. Rep for other Arm.

Robe: With G hook and B, starting at neck edge, ch 33 + 3 (first dc). Row 1 (right side): Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across (34 dc), turn. Row 2: Dc in each of next 6 dc, ch 3, skip next 3 dc (for armhole opening), dc in each of next 16 dc, ch 3, skip next 3 dc (for armhole opening), dc in each of next 5 dc (34 sts), turn. Row 3: Dc in each dc and each ch across, turn. Rows 4-10: Dc in each dc across, turn. Row 11: Ch 1, sc in each dc across. Fasten off B. 

Sleeve (make 2): Starting at top of Sleeve, with G hook and B, ch 12 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch. Rnd 1: Dc in each ch around (12 dc). Rnds 2-4: Dc in each dc around. Rnd 5: • Dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc •, rep from • to • around (16 dc). Rnd 6: Dc in each dc around. Rnd 7: • Dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc •, rep from • to • around (20 dc). Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in each dc around. Fasten off B, leaving a sewing length. Sew Sleeve into armhole opening, easing in fullness. 

Fringe: Cut B into 4 in. lengths. Using 2 strands for each Fringe, single knot one Fringe in first sc in last row of Robe and in every other st across bottom edge, ending with one Fringe in last sc.

Drawstring: With G hook and B, ch 55. Fasten off B. Weave drawstring over then under the sts in Row 1 of Robe, leaving equal lengths on each side of Robe. Make an overhand knot at each end of Drawstring.

Headpiece: With G hook and B, ch 35 + 3 (first dc). Row 1 (right side): Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across (36 dc), do not turn. Fasten off B. Row 2 (right side): With right side facing, join D in first dc in Row 1, dc in each dc across, turn. Fasten off D. Row 3 (wrong side): With wrong side facing, join B in first dc in Row 2, dc in each dc across, do not turn. Fasten off B. Row 4: With wrong side facing, join D in first dc in Row 3, dc in each dc across, turn. Fasten off D. Row 5: With right side facing, join B in first dc in Row 4, dc in each dc across, do not turn. Fasten off B. Row 6: With right side facing, join D in first dc in Row 5, dc in each dc across. Fasten off D. With wrong sides facing, fold Headpiece in half, matching sts in Row 6 from fold at top of Headpiece to bottom edge of Headpiece. Working in back loops only, sew back seam of Headpiece. Edging: With right side facing, join D in bottom left-hand corner of Headpiece. Working across bottom edge, ch 1, work 3 sc in each row-end dc across. Fasten off D.

Headband: With K hook and one strand each of A, B and D held tog as one, ch 45. Fasten off. Make an overhand knot at each end.

Finishing: Beard: Cut one 24 in. length of Nickel and wrap around 4 in. piece of cardboard 3 times. Slide yarn off cardboard keeping loops intact to form Beard. Center beard on face, wrapping under chin. Using tapestry needle and H, sew one end of Beard to each side of Head. 

Mustache: Cut a 10 in. length of Nickel and wrap around 2 in. piece of cardboard 2½ limes. Slide yarn off cardboard keeping loops intact. Center mustache on face directly above Beard. Using tapestry needle and H, sew center of Mustache to face. 

Eyes: With tapestry needle and 3 strands of G, straight st 2 horizontal lines ⅜ in. long, ¼ in. above Mustache and ¼ in. apart. Glue one 3 mm black pompom centered over each line for Eye as pictured. Place Robe on Body, tighten Drawstring to fit around neck, and tie In a bow. Fold cuffs of Sleeves up to expose hands. Place Headpiece on Head and pull down snugly. Wrap Headband around Head and forehead and tie in a knot in back.


Mary: Make Head and Body same as Joseph's Head and Body. Make 2 Arms same as Joseph's Arms. 

Assembly: Using the 6 in. cone, place a mark 4 in. down from the top for the back. On opposite side of cone,  place a mark 5 in. down from the top for the front. Cut bottom of cone on an angle from mark on front to mark on back of cone to form kneeling position. Continue Assembly same as Joseph. After placing Body over cone, flatten bottom of Body, sew open end tog, fold ring. Rnd 2: • Hdc in hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (18 hdc). Rnds 3-6: Dc in each hdc around. Rnd 7: Hdc in each dc around. Rnd 8: Ch 1, • sc in hdc, ch 3, skip next hdc •, rep from • to • around, sl st to join. Fasten off B.

Finishing: Eyes: With tapestry needle and 3 strands of G, straight st 2 lines centered on face ¼ in. long and ¼  in. apart. 

Hair: Cut one ¼ in. length from leftover curl. Using 3 strands of G, sew to forehead, centered approx ½ in. above Eyes as pictured. With tapestry needle and 2 strands of I, back st the outline of a ½ in. heart on front of Body. Place Swaddling clothes on Body.


Large Sheep (make 2): 

Body: Starting at tail end, with D hook and A, ch 6 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch. Rnd 1: Work 10 hdc in ring. Rnd 2: • Hdc in hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (15 hdc). Rnd 3: • Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (20 hdc). Rnds 4-8: Hdc in each hdc around. Rnd 9: • Hdc in each of next 3 hdc, dec 1 hdc in next 2 hdc •, rep from • to • around (16 hdc). Rnd 10: • Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, dec 1 hdc in next 2 hdc •, rep from • to • around (12 hdc). Stuff lightly and continue stuffing as work progresses. Rnds 11-13: Hdc in each hdc around.

Beg Head: Rnd 14: • Hdc in hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (18 hdc). Rnds 15-16: Hdc in each hdc around. Rnd 17: Ch 1, • sc in hdc, dec 1 sc in next 2 hdc •, rep from • to • around (12 sc). Rnd 18: • Sc in each or next 2 sc, dec 1 sc in next 2 sc •, rep from • to • around (9 sc). Fasten off A, join Black yarn. 

Beg Muzzle: Rnd 19: With D hook and Black yarn, ch 1, • sc in sc, dec 1 sc in next 2 sc •, rep from • to • around (6 sc). Rnd 20: Working through double thickness, sl st across opening to close. Fasten off, leaving an 8 in. sewing length. 

Eyes: With tapestry needle and sewing length, insert needle through center of Muzzle, through Head, exiting for Eye ½ in. to left of center approx ¼ in. behind beg of Muzzle, draw yarn through Head, insert needle approx ⅛ in. toward Body for right Eye, exiting in corresponding position on right side of Head, insert needle approx ⅛ in. toward Body for left Eye, exiting at center of Muzzle and secure.

Ear (make 2): With D hook and A, ch 6. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 ch, tr in last ch. Fasten off A, leaving a sewing length. With right side facing Head and ears pointing downward, sew tr end of Ears to Head, approx ½ in. behind beg of Muzzle and ¾ in. apart.

Tail: With D hook and A, ch 8. Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. With tapestry needle and sewing length, sew Tail, curling under, to tail end of Body at top of Rnd 1.

Leg (make 4): With D hook and A, ch 9 • 2 (first hdc). Row 1 (right side): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across (10 hdc), turn. Rows 2-3: Hdc in each hdc across, turn. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. 

Hoof: With right side facing, leaving a 3 in. sewing length, join Black yarn in first ch of foundation ch. Working across row-end sts, ch 1, sc evenly across. Fasten off, leaving a 3 in. sewing length. Tie sewing lengths tog to start forming Leg. With tapestry needle and A. matching sts, sew last row to foundation ch to form leg. 

Assembly: Cut white chenille stems into two 6 in. lengths. Insert one stem at shoulder height through Rnd 3 of Body. Insert 2nd stem at hip height through Rnd 10 of Body. Adjust stems, leaving equal lengths on each side of Body. Bend stems down to form Legs and place a small drop of glue where Legs extend from Body. Slide one Leg cover over each chenille stem. With tapestry needle and A, sew top of each Leg to Body.


Small Lamb: Starting at tail end, with D hook and A, ch 4 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch. Rnd 1: Work 8 hdc in ring. Rnd 2: • Hdc in hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (12 hdc). Rnd 3: • Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc •, rep from • to • around (16 hdc). Rnds 4-5: Hdc in each hdc around. Rnd 6: • Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, dec 1 hdc in next 2 hdc •, rep from • to • around (12 hdc). Rnd 7: • Hdc in hdc, dec 1 hdc in next 2 hdc •, rep from • to • around (8 hdc). Stuff Body lightly and continue stuffing as work progresses. 

Beg Neck: Ends 8-9: Hdc in each hdc around.

Beg Muzzle: Rnd 14: With D hook and Black yarn, ch 1, • dec 1 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next sc •, rep from • to • once, dec 1 sc in next 2 sc (5 sc). Rnd 15: Working through double thickness, sl st across opening to close. Fasten off, leaving an 8 in. sewing length. 

Eyes: Work Eyes same as for Large Sheep, positioning Eyes ⅛ in. behind beg of Muzzle.

Ear (make 2): With D hook and A, ch 5. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. Sew Ears to Head same as for Large Sheep, positioning Ears ¼ in. behind beg of Muzzle and ½ in. apart.

Tail: With D hook and A, ch 6. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length.

Leg (make 4): With D hook and A, ch 6 + 2 (first hdc). Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (7 hdc), turn. Rows 2-3: Hdc in each hdc across, turn. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. 

Hoof: With right side facing, leaving a 3 in. length of yarn, join Black yarn in first ch of foundation ch, working across row-end sts, sc evenly across. Fasten off, leaving a 3 in. sewing length. Tie sewing lengths tog to start forming Leg. With tapestry needle and A, matching sts, sew last row to foundation ch to form leg.

Assembly: Cut white chenille stems into two 4 in. lengths. Insert one stem at shoulder height through Rnd 3 of Body. Insert 2nd stem at hip height through Rnd 10 of Body. Adjust stems, leaving equal lengths on each side of Body. Bend stems down to form Legs and place a small drop of glue where Legs extend from Body. Slide one Leg cover over each chenille stem. With tapestry needle and A, sew top of each Leg to Body. 


Manger: Using Pattern Pieces, cut plywood with jigsaw. Glue pieces tog foll construction Diagram. Allow to dry. Paint or stain as desired. Splatter with black paint. Paint 4 black dots on each end of legs as pictured to suggest nail heads. Glue a small amount of excelsior to inside of Manger for 'straw'.
